About the Divas

Divas, 2011 Edition:

Here we are, almost 4 years since we started playing D&D together. Some changes over the years, but the core group is still here! Our newest additions are Olivia and Rachel (left to right — I’m between them in this picture).

A few weeks back, Taj suggested that we do a new group photo and a nice one to boot! She wanted us to be wearing our Sunday best for the photo. Um, that was mostly successful. Sarah does have a very nice dragon t-shirt on. 🙂

Our token guy, Tad, has left us for warmer climes. He’s down in LA now and we miss him and his puns.

Having Olivia and Rachel on board is great. Smart, funny and willing to game with a motley bunch like us. They tolerate, or perhaps encourage, our silliness — as evidenced by this other picture from the photo shoot:

As I said, we’ve been hanging out and rolling dice for almost 4 years. Below is a picture from that fateful first night.

It was the old space for Guardian Games and sometimes the music from upstairs was almost too much to bear.

I’d never played D&D before and everyone was so kind and helpful. They needed a healer and I’d played a Holy Paladin in World of Warcraft, so I said”OK, I’ll be the healer.” I found my niche, for sure! I’m not sure I want to play a different class.

When we played Serenity, I was sort of the ship’s healer, as the mechanic but I missed healing. What I really missed was magic. So we’re back to D&D!

I look forward to our Wednesday nights. We talk and eat and game. The current campaign, in Rokugan, is very fun. The politics of navigating through this pan-Asian culture are complex and add a fascinating layer. Having to pass a diplomacy check to heal a human is challenging –especially since my character is not human.

We’ve been playing every Wednesday (with occasional time off) for two and a half years!  A few people have come and gone, but it’s still the same core six playing every week. We like hanging out with each other so much that we went camping together (no LARPing).

Our first campling trip

Our first camping trip

We first played The Shackled City — 3.5 Dungeons and Dragons adventure. It took us almost two and a half years to finish it!  We’re a motley bunch, in game, I mean, humans, dwarfs, elves and half dragons. But we got the job done.

Here’s our last holiday photo. Tad (at far left) is our token guy — our Divo. And we love him. Any guy willing to hang out and play with girls week after week is OK in my book.

Now we are playing the Serenity RPG, with the Core gaming system and we are having a blast! Space western + Legos = fun.

If you find yourself in Portland, OR on a Wednesday night, stop by Guardian Games. We’d love to see you. Feel free to contact us with questions or comments.

About Beth:

I am a life-long gamer; coming back to Dungeons and Dragons after a 20 year break. I play with the same group of women (and Tad) every Wednesday. This blog captures the game from my character’s point of view. We have so much fun in the periphery of the game that I often do “meta” posts, too.

I love to read, play video games, cook and surf the web. Sometimes I get inspired to design a t-shirt or two. Currently I’m using my Wii to get fit with EA Active. It’s great.  Playing “Dragon Age” on the Xbox 360 and back to “Brain Age” (for the Sudoku) on the DS.

  1. I too have returned to D&D after a long hiatus and wonder why I ever left.

  2. Isn’t it just a blast? I so look forward to our Wednesday night game. And for me anyway, the group and particularly the DM make such a difference!

  3. A friend of mine sent me a link to this site and an article about the Dungeon Divas. I felt that I should say hello. I am slowly making strides for us here in Indianapolis, Indiana. My gaming group started 6 years ago with just the “guys” and me. However we had our first night of women outnumbering the men just last week!

  4. It feels like there’s some growing gamer girl momentum. Maybe the internet is helping connect us.

  5. I love D&D. I have all my boys playing now. Our dundeon master plans games while we camp. So we have made it an every weekend thing at our home and once a month camping. Try anything with your kids that broadens their imagination. They will love you for it later in life. You Divas are an inspiration to all us lady gamers. Keep it up Girls!

  7. Do you all still do your gaming? I have not seen any activity as of recently. I actually recall seeing your vids on youtube as well but it appears the account is closed, so wasn’t sure if you all still do your gaming. Take care.

  8. Hi Adam! We are taking a break for a few months. Everyone’s lives got kind of busy. I do hope that we get back to the table together.
Thank you for the kind words.
    Take care yourself!

  9. Well that is cool and understandable. The same goes with me. I recall years of DM’ing and well, good times. What edition do you normally play. I loved the segment on youtube that showed you playing Arkham Horror. I actually play that all the time. Do you have any other accounts you actively use, a new one on youtube or something to that effect? Thanks for getting back.

  10. Hey Adam, for most of our playtime we did D&D 3.5. We did a few 4E one shots and I like some mechanics but being a wonky healer, I prefer 3.5. We also had a stint playing Serenity, which was a blast — Legos in space! And we played Oriental Adventures for a while. Didn’t really get into that, although it’s a cool idea.
And lol, Arkham Horror! We had a ton of fun playing it but man, is it complex.
And, no sadly nothing else going on at the moment but when we gear back up, we’ll let everyone know!
    Thanks again. Beth

  11. Sorry for the late response. sounds awesome. I heard good things about 3.5 but not so many good things about 4 for whatever reason. I was raised on edition 1 and 2. Sounds awesome. I look forward to it. 😀
