We struggled with Oriental Adventures. It is a great setting and challenging, but the ebb and flow of life events and the unfamiliar mythology are what did us in, in my opinion. So, we are back to our roots: D&D 3.5 and back in an epic adventure — The Age of Worms. It is fun because this is the same universe as Shackled City but with new 1st level characters. Both for the fun of new personalities and some new faces at the gaming table, we rolled new characters.

We’ll get to know them better in the coming weeks. For now, Angel’s character is a gnome named Lily Folker — Fizznip to her friends. Next, Mawley is Taj’s new human fighter. Our former sorceress turns in her staff for a sword. My new character is Ariel, a half elf cleric. Yeah, going totally against type (not) with a cleric.

Next is Olivia’s new character Vakka — a half orc cleric who believes in transcendence through alcohol. Chica is new-comer Judy’s halfling ranger. She rides a chicken. Yeah, total win. Grrriel is Michelle’s half orc character. She and Vakka are cousins. Kurboom is a gnome sorceress, played by Adrienne and Zuffy is a half elf ranger played by Shalon.

Big group and one human. Huh. Bunch of rugrats. Well three little folk. And a chicken. And our own Sarah (Acgar, the half dragon) is taking the DM helm. We are honored to have using her time, energy and humor to make our gaming night each Wednesday.

Here’s our initial group portrait:

There are a lot of Legos out there. Angel owns one of each of them, I’m pretty sure. Michelle comes in close second and I shoulda known that Tad would fit in — he’s a total Lego geek, too. It’s a tie — three against three. But we’re talking geeks here and well, it’s Angel’s shop we play in, so that means that me and Taj and Sarah are outnumbered. When you face superior forces, the smart choice is assimilation.

So, what sort of Legos are out there for girl gamers like us? The easy answer is All the Legos! All the Legos are “suitable” for girls. Cue the maniacal laughter.

I realized I’d been looking at the whole Lego thing the wrong way round. The possibilities of Legos in game are endless. I hope we’ll have a chance to test this theory. We’re planning on trying out the Firefly RPG next. And I was thinking How are we gonna handle the minis? I mean with playing Shackled City, it was easy to get minis for the game. With a futuristic, Wild West, space opera, um, where are you going to get minis?

Duh: Legos! A quick look on Google shows me that even I could come up with some sweet props for a Firefly game. So, I guess we can put away the Castle Legos for a while as we explore the universe of Serenity.

Legos Star Wars sets would be the obvious Legos to use for some of the props. Oh, and of course, Indiana Jones! Lucky for this cheapskate there are tons of used cheap Legos out there. It is fun to contemplate a new world to explore. A new gaming engine to learn and new stories to tell. I can’t wait to build my mini!

Wondering what lava would look like in a D&D setting? Just ask Michelle our amazing DM. For a scene of volcanic activity on the streets of our beloved Cauldron, she made flubber (which you may remember from this little adventure), colored it orangey, covered it with dark colored sand and TaDa! You have slightly cooling lava.

As you can see, the townspeople look perfect on the lava flow.

This is what happens when you have a crafty and scientific DM. She explained all about how the lava flows and cools and cracks. We had to get those people off the lava before they fell in.

In the same game session, she produced two more awesome props.
As you’d expect with lava in the street, the night began with an earthquake and we emerged from a building to find the rubbble of a house in front of us.

You’ll notice the playing cards under the rubble. There were 5 people trapped in the rubble.

There were a dozen playing cards and 5 of them were face cards, to represent the trapped people.

If we made our check (which poor Indira did not), we got to roll a D4 and remove that many cards. Wonderfully inventive!

And, as we tried to make our way through the city, we encountered a street that had crumbled. There were half a dozen townspeople who’d fallen the 30 feet to the bottom. This is the chasm before the townspeople were placed.

Michelle did not make these props, but she was smart enough to borrow terrain from the 40k guys. I mean a DM has to have some fun!

The true height of the terrain allowed us to have lots of fun with other props including Taj’s patented ladder (made from mini blinds string.)
You’re probably wondering about the horde of Lego people….. well, you’ll have to wait for the gameplay posts!

Michelle, our DM, is quite crafty and in her “spare” time she makes some sweet props and terrain for our Wednesday game.

The “acid” in the picture is Flubber. If you ask Michelle, she’s tell you all about the compounds that go into making it. I know it has glue & Borax. And that the Borax has long arms that wrap around the glue molecules…… er, or something like that.

Michelle and Angel both have the Lego gene. So sometimes we have Lego NPCs and Lego monsters like the sea monster that almost ate Debbie’s character on her birthday. In this picture, the red-head, she’s one bad mutha.

Sometimes it's the simple things that make a difference

Being crafty also means that Michelle just happens to have loose feathers laying around to use for the Cathedral of Feathers!

The purple liquid pictured is pure chemistry. Again, don’t ask me what she used but the flavor text in the Shackled City book says that two clear streams fall into the pool and the liquid becomes purple. And Ta Da! She made it happen.

Better living through chemicals

When two of the NPCs got married, Michelle made wedding cake. We had sparkling cider, cake and mingled with wedding guests. The mingling was very clever: Michelle put the names of dozens of NPCs on index cards. On the backside she put information that the NPCs would tell adventurers like us.

Those are strawberry peeps around the edges.

I’m grateful for Michelle and the time she gives to the game. I’m also grateful to all the Divas. Great props and no players would not work very well, either.
