Brigid Writes Home

Dear Brother,

I hope this letter finds you well.  It’s been two months since we last saw each other, and I know I’m overdue for an update.  Things have been going well with my philanthropic work.  I know you don’t fully approve of my life choices, but I remain convinced we are doing a lot of good for a lot of people.

We last saw each other when we got the news that Elijah Wingate’s daughter, Prudence, had gotten caught up in some trouble and was missing.  I took my travel crew to find her.  That turned into a bit of trouble.  But I already sent you a wave about all that.  And you already said, “I told you so.”

Brother, when will you understand that it is sometimes necessary to fight for justice?  That true equality for all peoples is worth a little discomfort?  I take no joy in the assaults on others, or on the people I’ve killed.  These things I’ve done are necessary.  Black is just a symbol for all the ruthless characters preying on the disadvantaged.

So we eliminated him and his crew.  True, we didn’t take out his big boss, but we did get a shiny new ship which we re-christened D-VA.  I’m sure you recognize the reference. And we were able to trade a lot of loot for medicine and food for a lot of people whose planets were ravaged by war.

Since then, we’ve used our new ship to travel to some of the inner rim planets, those still recovering from the war.  Our supplier in Persephone has been great giving us the over-runs and mislabeled foods.  Imago’s medical clinic had surplus supplies as well.  So we’ve been able to help a lot of communities.  Having Imago around is truly a blessing.  You should have seen her treating all our wounded.  But I digress.

Maggie got a wave from an old friend.  Todd Wilkinson is some salvage operator.  Finds ships from the war, strips them and sells them for scrap.  He says he has word of a great load of ships, some of them settlers.  Swei’s eyes lit up so bright you could see them shine through the back of her head.  She’s always looking for spare parts for the engines.  That and she’s just such a gear head.  Sometimes I think she’s saving parts so she can build an entire ship all for herself.

I’ll send you another update when we get back from Todd’s adventure.

Yours,

Brigid

Asteroid Field Dead Ahead

Posted in: Play,Serenity by Ariel on April 13, 2010

Since it was Maggie’s fault we were in the asteroid belt, it’s only fittin’ that she got us outta there in one piece, or there abouts. D-VA only took a teeny bit of damage to a thrust capacitor and hell, I got plenty a capacitors layin’ around.

I swear we weren’t two hours back home aboard ship when Maggie gets this wave. Old friend from the old days askin’ if we want some action. Wilkerson’s his name and Miss V says she’ll meet him at his old mine and hear his proposal. Well, I like salvage as much as the next person. Maybe more. And so even though I don’t trust these boys, I’ll fly with ‘em. And then, Bam! Asteroids. If we didn’t have bad luck, we’d have no luck at all, as Grandpappy used to say.

We had some close calls but me and Captain Prudence helped out some with the lookout and that got us through the field pretty well. I swear I had my head down on that screen for hours. Doc tells me it was twenty minutes getting through the field and I reminded her of what old Al Einstein used to say about relativity!

As I said, she came through pretty good, the old girl. Our D-VA is a fine machine, no matter what anyone says.
