It felt good to get out of Cauldron. It’s been a busy couple of days, what with assassination attempts, arson and jail time. It’s good to be on the road again. According to the Herald, Kingfisher Hollow is having serious undead issues. Although I wouldn’t admit this to my friends, I’m thankful to have a chance to smite some undead. I have felt a disconnect with Pelor and doing his good work will, I hope, bring me back into his full light.
Kingfisher Hollow is Ian’s hometown — we promised to help him. And we had a chance almost immediately.

As we crossed a bridge over Red river, we saw a misty form in the distance. Sadi, with her archer’s eyes, saw that it was a ghostly woman.
When she said that, I could suddenly see the human form inside the mist. I turned to my friends. “How do you fight a ghost?” Various patted my arm. “They are just as undead as zombies, sweetie. Just do your little sunshine hoo-ha and they will go Poof!” My fingers tightened around my symbol of Pelor. “Hoo-ha? You know this is powerful –” Myntilly snapped her fingers. “There are more of them. Let’s move.”
I hope the Cauldron Herald doesn’t get a hold of this story. What would my father think? A Burningwood with a police record?
We had no trouble slipping away from the fire last night. I had my hat of disguise and Myntilly went invisible.
In the morning, after a successful Solstice ritual, we talked over our options. As we ate our oatmeal and fresh baked bread, the new edition of the Herald was delivered. Acgar had that look on her face as she opened the paper. “I wonder if you made headlines.”
After our deep discussion about game styles, Michelle gave us homework. She asked us to read this blog post and decide where we fit on the grid.
We talked it over and decided that most of us prefer story, our story, over the game’s story. Combat is good but it’s not everything.
As we were talking, I realized that I want D&D to be like my favorite video games — if there is something in-game and I want to interact with it, I should be able to. I dislike having some cool looking thing sitting on a table and I can’t touch it. It’s like why put that there if you won’t let me use it?
Michelle is very good about stuff like that. Setting fire to the Jasidian temple is a perfect example. Somehow I don’t think that is in the written scenarios for Shackled City, but she let us do it.
We also talked about ways to speed up combat.
Michelle got some great advice from other DMs through our Meetup site. Ashley came up with a great way to display the buffs that her character, Various, has given to the party. Color-coded, even.
We used several techniques with last night’s combat and it went well. We were done with the combat in 90 minutes! And we kicked undead dino butt. But that’s another story.
